Marty Turco On A Short Leash

Chicago Blackhawks goalie Marty Turco is on a short leash with Coach Q and he better get his act together before he loses his starting job.

TrueHockey.com’s Adam Strickland wrote in regards to Coach Q and his tolerance of Turco’s poor play,

“He will have little patience for the up and down play Turco is known to give especially when mistakes are made overplaying the puck. There are plenty of teams who will purposely place pucks in areas to force Turco to leave his crease. It’s no secret, for as many good plays he makes Turco can also be a turnover machine.”

I said before the season began that I hope it doesn’t happen but there was a chance there would be a goalie controversy like the one between Huet and Niemi last season. Turco has played decently but he played for a poor Dallas Stars team. Moving to the defending Stanley Cup champs brings a certain level of expectations along with it. Clearly Turco hasn’t lived up to those expectations in the two games he played and Coach Q is showing he has no problem in playing Corey Crawford in his place.

So we will see where things go in the upcoming weeks but we could see a repeat of last year all over again. I’d expect Turco to play better in the near future but this issue isn’t going to go away. The only plus side is that last year it lead us to a Stanley Cup, so maybe Turco getting benched in place of Crawford will spark the same thing all over again.

I believe Turco is simply a bit to old, last season he did play for a Dallas Stars team that wasnt nearly as hot as they are currently. Turco is a seasoned goalie with experience i believe that once he plays more game’s and becomes acustom to the way the hawks defense men play and gets more confident and trusting in his fellow players he’ll work out fine. Also on another note, Corey Crawford is a young player 6’11 ft tall very fast good at keeping the puck from just “sliding in.” I believe that if they let Corey Crawford more play time with accumulated experience he’ll be good to making for an excellent back up goal tender or even a starter depending on Marty Turco. But dont count Turco out just yet im sure one he gets warmed up to the team along with all of it’s new members doing the same, he’ll be able to fill the gap of expectations Coach Q. wants him to meet.

You do have some good points there and you’re right, Turco probably will work out just fine after he gets more games under his belt with the Blackhawks. But I’ve said it repeatedly, I see another goalie controversy this season, it just seems to be shaping up that way. The comparisons are already being made with saying Crawford is the next Niemi so it seems like the majority of people are expecting something like that to happen again this year.
